The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared 28 September as International Day for Universal Access to Information on 17 November 2015.
It should be noted that since 2015, civil society organizations and government bodies in the world have adopted and currently celebrate this observance.
The UN General Assembly, in its resolution 74/5 of 15 October 2019, also adopted 28 September as the International Day for Universal Access to Information.
“Universal access to information means that everyone has the right to seek, receive and impart information. Access to information is more and more recognized as a prerequisite for sustainable development and for claiming human rights. With SDG 16, the target (16.10) to promote access to information is also anchored in the 2030 Agenda.” Source: IISD
This year the day is celebrated under the slogan “Access to Information – Saving lives, Building Trust, Bringing Hope!”
The Cameroon Association Of Media Professionals, CAMP, joins UNESCO and other UN Agencies to observe this day.
CAMP also requests that other Journalism Associations and Syndicates join its campaign by calling on all those who withhold Public Information, To Make It Public.
The Cameroon Association Of Media Professionals, CAMP, feels that access to information to help people make informed choices is still an issue that needs to be addressed.
We are in critical times and adhere to the slogan that “Information Saves Lives, Builds Trust and Brings Hope”.
